Prof Elisa Morgera Contributes to Climate Justice Discussions in Australia
Professor Elisa Morgera conducted an academic visit to Australia in mid-May in her capacity as UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change and Human Rights, contributing to national and international discussions on human rights, climate governance, and the energy transition.
In Canberra, Elisa met parliamentarians to discuss her recent reports on human rights and the energy transition, as well as the Australian Senate initiative on information integrity and climate change. She also met with the Australian Human Rights Commissioner, whose landmark report Human Rights on a Warming Earth drew on Elisa’s work on defossilisation and human rights. The report is available at Human Rights on a Warming Earth.
At Melbourne Law School, Elisa discussed with postgraduate students the work of several UN Special Procedures over the last three years on climate change and human rights. She also participated in a conference on international law and the blue economy, and delivered the 2026 Sir Kenneth Bailey Memorial Lecture on the topic “State obligations on climate change and human rights: where are we at and where do we go from here?” During her visit to University of Sydney, Elisa met with scholars working on more-than-human rights, the ocean–climate nexus, Indigenous science, and the arts.
Finally, in Melbourne again, she spent time in Bright, Victoria, meeting children, young climate activists, teachers, parents, and academics to discuss intergenerational perspectives on climate justice and community action. Reflections on these conversations can be found in the Bright Days blog post, alongside ABC Radio coverage of the visit (listen from minute 8.34).
