Daphne and her Sisters: Exploring Gendered Violence in Early Modern Literature and Art

A two-day conference exploring representations of gendered violence in early modern literature and art will take place in Durham on 10–11 June 2026. Organised by Professor Ita Mac Carthy and supported by The British Academy, the event combines the launch of the new Daphne and her Sisters research project with a concluding series of readings dedicated to Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Inamoramento de Orlando.

We welcomed Dr Francesco Bongarrà, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London, and Mr Gabriele Magagnin, Italian Consul General (Manchester), to celebrate and strengthen our longstanding ties with Italy. MLAC Alumni Success: Matt Hilborn wins AHGBI award and Joss Morfitt contributes to BFI Flare 40th anniversary

Two MLAC alumni have recently achieved notable successes. Dr Matt Hilborn has won the Edgar Allison Peers Award (2025) from the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland for the best early-career essay, while Dr Joss Morfitt will contribute to the 40th anniversary programme of the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, including delivering a sold out public talk.
