Welcome to Durham Centre for Soft Matter

Soft matter is all around us (not to mention inside us), including polymers, gels, colloids, liquid crystals and biological tissue. Members of the Durham Centre for Soft Matter therefore pursue research that covers a wide range of disciplines across the whole Faculty of Science.

Topics we address range from the biophysics of membranes to the concept of ‘softness’ in the context of volcanic magma. We use techniques ranging from atomic force microscopy to high performance computing. Our work delivers tangible value to industries and, as importantly, benefits from the collaborative and interdisciplinary environment in which our postgraduate students are immersed.
