DRMC Visual Methods and Media Panel
Tuesday 12th May 2026 at 10.30am
Title - 'How can scholars harness visual arts, media, and methods?'
This panel brings together scholars from the social sciences and humanities to discuss the value of visual methods and the visual arts for research. The conversation will focus on the practicalities of working visually and the many ways scholars can incorporate visual media, methods, and outputs into their own research projects.
The panel will explore how visual materials can support immersion in a topic, help develop literature reviews, and function as primary sources and collectable data. It will also consider how visual approaches can serve as tools for analysis and reflection, and how visual forms—such as images, diagrams, installations, or other media—can become research outputs in their own right. Each panellist approaches visual work from a different perspective, ranging from photohistory to network theory.
Following the panel discussion, the session will open to conversation with the audience, inviting participants to reflect on how visual methods might be incorporated into their own work.
The aim is to offer a practical introduction to visual approaches in research, including resources and tools, to encourage scholars to think more visually about how knowledge can be explored, analysed, and communicated. By the end of the session, we will all be more visually literate, as researchers, peers, and artists in our own rights.
There will be a lunch following this event at 12.00pm.
