Durham Research Methods Centre will host a Symposium with Dr Mark Murphy, University of Glasgow and Dr Cristina Costa, Durham University

Wednesday 13th May 2026 at 10.30am

Title - 'Being critical about conducting critical research: a methodological exploration.'

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relation between critical reflexivity, especially when it comes to theory application in education, and disciplinarity as it pertains to the field of critical education studies. This builds on previous work where we have explored questions of critical reflexivity (and the lack of it) in theory-driven methodologies in education research (Murphy and Costa, 2022) and the role of disciplinarity in fostering and defending intellectual freedom, especially the freedom to theorise from a methodological perspective (Murphy, 2022).

All PGR/PGT Students and all DU Staff welcome!
