Title - 'Understanding spatial behaviour and crime: An agent-based modelling perspective.'

A group of criminological theories under the rubric of environmental criminology, recognize that the convergence in space-time of a potential offender and a target is necessary for a crime to occur. The specific ‘where’ and ‘when’ of convergence stems from the spatial behavior patterns of individuals. Those behavior patterns, in turn, are a product of the interaction between people and the environment. Simulation modeling, specifically agent-based simulation modeling, has tremendous potential for helping us understand the dynamics of crime events in their contextual environment. Special attention is paid to how simulation can be used when the limitations of statistical techniques, cost or privacy concerns preclude empirical research.
